New Member ... welcome!!

I wanted to welcome Sarah Ballard to the book club! Since we're close to the end of July, I thought this would also be a good time to suggest books for August. I suggest the book Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. The synopsis is below. Of course, please suggest other books and please remember to finish reading and start blogging about This Is Where I Leave You ... otherwise this book club will really be a Bhardwaj Sisters Book Club (BSBC).

Stranger in a Strange Land, winner of the 1962 Hugo Award, is the story of Valentine Michael Smith, born during, and the only survivor of, the first manned mission to Mars. Michael is raised by Martians, and he arrives on Earth as a true innocent: he has never seen a woman and has no knowledge of Earth's cultures or religions. But he brings turmoil with him, as he is the legal heir to an enormous financial empire, not to mention de facto owner of the planet Mars. With the irascible popular author Jubal Harshaw to protect him, Michael explores human morality and the meanings of love. He founds his own church, preaching free love and disseminating the psychic talents taught him by the Martians. Ultimately, he confronts the fate reserved for all messiahs.

  1. Looks like our bicoastal book club has at least three members in Cambridge. Sarah and Jess, we should meet and discuss over wine! I'm happy to host a first meeting at my place sometime in September.

    What's our book for September?

    Best,

  3. Also- my friend Maddy (who I forgot to formally intro to the book club) just moved to cambridge as well!

This is not a formal book club suggestion, but I've been telling Vaishali this over and over- if you haven't read 'A confederacy of dunces' I highly suggest you do- it made me laugh a lot!

And as to the book club sept selection- don't we normally elect someone to choose? I've chosen recently, and I think the last book was Antara's suggestion. I say a recently new member should choose! Maddy? Sarah? Priti? you guys tell us what to read!

  4. We should have in-person meetings in our 3 cities: SF, Seattle, and Cambridge for the book club! Yeah right, good luck coordinating that! Is there anyone else in LA with Charitha?

Priti -- I remember you had a suggestion, that book I started reading the first chapter of when we were in Mexico, some award winning book.

Ferah -- I started reading 'Confederacy...' and really was enjoying it, but then it got slow at some point for me. I'd be down to do that book again if it's voted on, but I agree, let's have some of the less vocal members choose a book!
